The latest Playstation 5 model has been introduced and is available for sale in select countries. The Sony device has a new standard design and has a remarkable and mysterious customization.
Little by little, more and more Playstations 5 (PS5) are becoming available. Apparently, the shortage of these consoles will soon diminish. But, first see then believe. However, the company has launched a new model in Australia, Japan and parts of America. This new model has a new standard design and a mysterious weight reduction.
Latest Playstation 5 model
This month, the new model appeared in the aforementioned countries. Thanks to a teardown video from YouTuber Austin Evans the mystery has now been solved: Sony has changed the heatsink that helps cool the PS5. So a smaller heat sink is needed to keep the device at a normal temperature. The cooler is a lot smaller than the original and makes up for the full 300 gram (0.6 pound) weight reduction, according to Evans. It’s not clear why Sony switched the heatsink so early in the PS5’s lifecycle, but Evans does note that it made his PS5 hotter – with exhaust temperatures at the back about 3 to 5 degrees higher. However, this may be due to production deviations.
Worse?
The YouTuber concludes that the changes make the PS5 worse, because of the extra heat. That can’t be good. He says, “I don’t think there’s any argument that this (the ‘old’ PS5) is a worse console, at least for thermals and for cooling,” Evans says. “As far as I’m concerned, I’d rather have a PS5 launch.”
But the overhaul comes just as Sony reveals it’s no longer selling all consoles at a loss, and after reports last year suggested Sony was struggling to keep PS5 costs down, thanks in part to its expensive cooling solution. Evans has only opened a Digital Edition version of the PS5, so we’re not sure if Sony also changed the cooling unit on the model with a disc drive.
