If Apple releases a security update for older devices, it’s serious! Update your ancient iPhone 5s and iPhone 6.
Wednesday we expect the iPhone 14 and iOS version 16 at the presentation of Apple. But really old devices also benefit from a software update, namely iOS 12.5.6. The vulnerability this addresses makes the update very useful for your old iPhone.
A vulnerability could allow a malicious website to run unchecked code on your phone if you open it in your Safari browser. Apple warns that it is quite possible that someone somewhere in the evil outside world is exploiting this vulnerability.
To update
If you have an older iPhone 5s or 6, you can install the update by going to your settings. Under General, choose Software update. If the update is too big for your somewhat outdated phone, you can free up some space by removing apps or media, for example.
Click the download and install button and there it goes. If you still have such an outdated iPhone lying around, it’s probably a good idea to perform an update. Apple makes it suitable for older devices for a reason.
Incidentally, this update is also available for the original iPad Air, iPad Mini 2 and 3 and the sixth generation iPod Touch.
