What is the jujube?
The jujube tree (Zizyphus vulagris) is a thorny tree up to 8 to 10 meters high. There are two very distinct species: one likes the dry climates and poor soils of the Middle East and around the Mediterranean. Its small fruits (2 to 5 cm long) are bright red. The other grows in the tropical and subtropical climates found in China. The fruits are much larger and the flesh rather orange.
In both cases, the properties of the jujube tree have been known for millennia: in addition to the use of the fruit in gastronomy, its leaves have cleansing properties and the jujubes, very rich in fiber, act on the intestinal and metabolic spheres.
What are the benefits of the jujube tree?
The leaves, seeds and fruits of the jujube tree have very distinct properties and uses:
- Leaves : they have antibacterial properties that make them effective against pimples and other skin conditions. In powder form, they help to fight against dandruff and the itchy scalp. Their richness in saponosides makes them a real natural shampoo.
- Seeds: reduced to powder and roasted, they would help to fight against insomnia and the stress.
- Fruit: jujubes are exceptionally rich in fiber, but also in antioxidant vitamin C. They stimulate intestinal transithave a appetite suppressant effect and contribute to regulate blood sugar and cholesterol.
How to consume the jujube tree and its fruits?
The easiest way to enjoy the benefits of the jujube tree is to consume its fruit. We can find them in Asian grocery stores, especially dried fruits. THE dried gummies look like dates. THE fresh gummies should be firm, without blemishes and their skin a shiny red. They can also be eaten in the form of jams, or canned, preserved in syrup or liqueur.
You can also take advantage of the virtues of the jujube tree in the form of dried leaf tea : count one tablespoon for 150 ml of boiling water. Leave to infuse for 15 minutes and consume after the meal.
Finally, food supplements based on jujube exist: capsules, tablets, powder… They are indicated in the treatment of fatigue or even urinary and kidney problems.
What are the side effects and contraindications of jujube?
Due to its very high fiber content, jujube can cause intestinal disorders : cramps and diarrhoea. Be careful if you have a sensitive intestine, your appetite is weak or you are prone to bloating.
In traditional Chinese medicine, jujube is not recommended in case of urinary tract infection.
Consumption of jujube seed is also not recommended in case of pregnancybecause it could cause contractions.
