The figure is as astonishing as it is worrying. According to a new survey by Public Health England (a public body owned by the UK Department of Health), around 6 million adults between the ages of 40 and 60 in England walk less than 10 straight minutes per month . Concretely, 41% of people in this age group have a clearly insufficient level of monthly physical activity!
In the rest of the British population, the finding is no more glorious: according to Public Health England, around 25% of adults are “inactive” and practice less than 30 minutes of physical activity per week. As a reminder, the World Health Organization recommends 10,000 steps per day, minimum, and at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily.
Sedentary lifestyle is dangerous for your health
Problem: sedentary lifestyle is a real scourge for health. Thus, various international studies have already shown that a lack of physical activity can promote back pain (by damaging the intervertebral discs), cause weight gain (or even overweight or obesity), weaken the bones (in particular in young adults), accelerate cellular aging, promote the appearance of chronic diseases (type 2 diabetes, for example …) … In short, a sneaky danger, not to be overlooked.
To encourage the British to move, Public Health England has therefore decided to launch a public health campaign. The goal: to walk (at least) 10 minutes a day. The official body invites 40-60 year olds to go shopping on foot, for example, instead of taking their car. In addition, he recommends regular walks after lunch in order to prepare for “many healthy years”.
