Climbing at least 50 steps a day can significantly reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.
- Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the leading causes of death in France.
- To stem this phenomenon, the Heart and Research Foundation invites the French to climb at least 50 steps per day.
- “By incorporating physical exercises such as stair climbing into our daily lives, we strengthen not only our heart but also our lungs and muscles, contributing to better overall health and greater longevity,” the institution says.
“Climb the stairs to save your life!” In a press release, Heart and Research Foundation announces that it is carrying out an awareness campaign around the fight against a sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity.
“As the Olympic Games approach, the Heart and Research Foundation is launching a poster campaign in partnership with JC Decaux and is inviting all French people to take up a simple but crucial challenge for their health: climb at least 50 steps a day,” can be read in the document sent to the editorial offices.
“It is essential to put the heart back at the center of our health”
“Proposing this challenge to the French this summer has a dual objective: to make them aware of the importance of physical activity to take care of their hearts and to highlight the importance of cardiovascular research in our country,” insists Professor Ariel Cohen, president of the Heart and Research Foundation.
“I support this challenge launched by the Heart and Research Foundation and I encourage the French to take part. It is essential to put the heart back at the center of our health and to become aware of the importance of taking care of it,” explains Professor François Carré, member of the Heart and Research Foundation and president of the collective “For a France in shape”.
Regularly climbing stairs reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 20%
A study published in September 2023 showed that regularly climbing stairs reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 20% (myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, etc.). “It is established that by climbing at least 50 steps every day, we can significantly improve our cardiovascular health,” indicates the Heart and Research Foundation.
“By incorporating physical exercises like stair climbing into our daily lives, we strengthen not only our heart but also our lungs and muscles, contributing to better overall health and greater longevity,” adds the institution. “Physical activity actually helps reduce blood pressure, improves blood circulation and increases heart capacity,” she emphasizes.
France: 400 deaths per day are caused by cardiovascular diseases
In France, 400 deaths per day are caused by cardiovascular diseases, which are therefore the leading cause of death in women and the second leading cause of death in men. In addition to the sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity mentioned in this article, high blood pressure, excess fat in the blood, diabetes and being overweight are major risk factors.
According to a study conducted by WHO researchers and published very recently, almost a third of adults worldwide (31.3%) had insufficient physical activity in 2022, a figure up 5% compared to 2010.
