Rich in minerals, good for morale, anti-wrinkle, against sunburn… Dark chocolate can also claim to protect our hearts. The flavonoids it contains are thought to play a role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Several studies have already made this hypothesis. The latest is an Australian study carried out by researchers at the University of Melbourne.
We learn this time that eating 100 grams of dark chocolate daily for at least ten years would bring serious benefits in reducing the risk of heart attack andstroke(Stroke). A result that should cringe several researchers for whom the habit of eating chocolate increases the risk of suffering fromobesity, itself a risk factor for stroke.
To reach this conclusion, Australian scientists observed 2,013 patients who all had a high risk of heart disease linked to high blood pressure or excess cholesterol. Scientists calculated from the experiment that a small amount of 60% or 70% dark chocolate consumed each day could prevent 70 non-fatal cardiovascular events and 15 fatal cardiovascular events per 10,000 consumers. All over a period of 10 years.
Are you more milk chocolate than dark chocolate? Not sure it’s that effective. Dark chocolate contains the most polyphenols. This helps to reduce the rate of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood and maintains the elasticity of the body’s blood vessel walls.
