As a reminder, listeria are the cause of a disease, listeriosis. This is’a very rare but potentially fatal bacterial infection. Listeriosis is mainly transmitted by ingesting contaminated food (cold meats, dairy products, fish, unwashed fruits and vegetables). More rarely, the disease is transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, or in a hospital setting (nosocomial transmission).
Symptoms are: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation. But also of fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle and joint pain.
Important: the incubation period can be very long, up to eight weeks. So be careful if you have eaten these industrial pâtés. If you develop these symptoms, seek prompt medical attention. . “The treatment of the disease is based on the administration of antibiotics (ampicillin and / or gentamicin)“, had explained to Top Santé, the gastroenterologist Christophe Bastid, in a previous file on listeria. But, the treatment of the infection Listeria monocytogenes is all the more effective the earlier it is administered.
Finally, note that the risks are greater in pregnant women. The bacterium crosses the placental barrier and can be responsible for in utero death or miscarriage. The child can be born prematurely and present severe health problems at birth.
“In a pregnant woman, an unexplained fever (above 38°C) must absolutely be the subject of a medical consultation because it is a sign that can evoke listeriosis“, advises Dr. Bastid.
