They hydrate, repair and relieve, but are they safe for health? In a news investigation, UFC-Que Choisir points to lip balms. The consumer defense association compared 21 products and found that half contained toxic substances. A few months after having discovered 11 undesirable substances in more than 400 cosmetic products, it gives the alert.
Vigilance is key
Ten references of lip sticks from the brands Yves Rocher, Garnier, Labello, Carmex, Laroche Posay, Boiron, Avène, Le petit Marseillais, Aptonia and Uriage are thus pinned down. In question ? The presence of endocrine disruptors ormineral oils carcinogens in the products tested. “We found residues, one is carcinogenic, the other seems to be toxic, but they accumulate in the liver and the lymph nodes”, specifies Fabienne Maleysson, journalist at UFC-Que Choisir, at France news.
Three of these balms contain BHT, a preservative considered an endocrine disruptor, while others contain mineral oils which generate toxic compounds if ingested, reveals the consumer protection association. Vigilance is therefore essential: “We are exposed to so many harmful products, whether in food or in cosmetics, so adding one to the mucous membranes of the lips, where there is very rapid absorption, is not a good thing”, warns Barbara Demeinex, specialist in endocrine disruptors.
