Spa gardens
The German spa gardens, many of which were established in the 19th century, are considered by experts to be among the most beautiful in the world. In the 19th century, the great garden artist Peter Joseph Lenné designed spas in Aachen, Bad Homburg, Bad Oeynhausen and Bad Neuenahr, among others. Ancient trees, ponds, fountains and themed gardens. Boxwood decorations, rose gardens, water features, labyrinths and of course well-maintained paths. They are magical places that fit seamlessly into the environment.
The historically grown parks and gardens retain their heritage, but also continue to develop – for the benefit of nature. Sustainability and diversity of plants are playing an increasingly important role in spa facilities today. Spa gardens and parks are therefore no longer just recreational areas, but also ecological habitats, where it is fortunately still a good place to be.
Theater and concerts
Don’t be surprised if music sounds from a concert pavilion in the summer. Today, parks and gardens become stages in the summer. The traditional spa concerts take place here, as well as theatrical performances and smaller music performances. Spa gardens thus become cultural meeting places in the open air. Spa guests also meet there to dance. In any case, spas and culture have been going hand-in-hand for years. And while there are many outdoor activities in the summer, most spas host exhibitions, lectures and art projects all year round.
Historic Architecture
Not only the art exhibitions are worth seeing. Also take a good look at the buildings in which they are located. The heart of most spas is the drinking room, where you can drink thermal water, and the Kurhaus, where you can take a mud bath, enjoy a massage or one of the other treatments. Often there is a beautiful colonnade, framed with rippling fountains and exotic trees.
As spas and baths rose in the 19th century and more and more guests had to be accommodated, beautiful buildings sprang up from the dunes on the Baltic Sea coast. Elegant spa houses and historic hotels were also built on the North Sea; beautiful, spacious buildings with a classic bright white look. And decorative Art Nouveau villas with facades, turrets and balconies, which have been lovingly restored time and again. There is even a name for it: Kurarchitektur or Bäderarchitektur. To this day, you can find these aesthetic spa houses and hotels in the spa towns of Germany’s coasts. Historic hotels, but with contemporary comfort. Bad Ems, Baden-Baden and Bad Kissingen in Germany have even been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Moreover, they are without exception in a beautiful setting, in the middle of the mountains, on a lake, by the sea or in the middle of the forest. We call that stylish cures. You can also endlessly walk or cycle, because in Germany you will find many cycling and walking routes. So every reason to book a weekend or week!
