While endometriosis affects 10% of women, the creation of specialized centers has been seen as a necessity in several Western countries over the past ten years. It is done in France with the creation and realization of the Franco-European Multidisciplinary Institute of Endometriosis (IFEM Endo) located in Bordeaux. Passeport Santé tells you more about the first French institute dedicated to endometriosis.
Ifem Endo, the first institute in France dedicated to endometriosis
Since 2018, the Tivoli-Ducos clinic in Bordeaux (Gironde) has had a structure entirely dedicated to endometriosis: the Franco-European Multidisciplinary Institute for Endometriosis (IFEM Endo). After three years of research and mobilization, the project of a Franco-European institute dedicated entirely to endometriosis is taking shape.
Set up by three gynecologists, Dr Isabella Chanavaz-Lacheray and Professor Horace Roman and Dr Benjamin Merlot, it is a private care structure exclusively dedicated to the medical and surgical management of endometriosis, clinical research and medical and paramedical training around this disease. The project aims to offer women a diagnosis and a therapeutic strategy by offering them comprehensive and tailor-made care. The center also deals with rare and severe forms of endometriosis (pelvic nerves, diaphragm, etc.).
One of the first endometriosis surgery centers in Europe
Since its creation, the institute has carried out 3,750 consultations per year and each year provides more than 750 endometriosis surgeries and more than 350 procedures for digestive endometriosis, which makes it one of the first centers for endometriosis surgery. in Europe. Indeed, this center is among the top 3 in Europe in terms of volume of activity and number of severe cases taken care of.
In addition, IFEM Endo is also very dedicated to clinical research. On their site, we learn that “ from January 2018 to September 2020, the founding members of IFEM Endo wrote or collaborated on 63 scientific articles, which were published in international or French journals: 53 original articles, 7 meta-analyzes or literature reviews, 3 editorials “. In addition, the IFEM Endo team provides surgical training. In 18 months, 115 French and foreign practitioners were trained on site in Bordeaux.
Between surgical activity coupled with intense clinical research and advanced surgical training, IFEM Endo has established itself as a reference center. All of the institute’s areas of expertise aim to provide better knowledge of endometriosis and therefore improve the management of the disease.
