The fibromyalgia is one of those widespread illnesses that everyone knows but which has not yet been officially recognized by the state as an illness, and more particularly, as a long-term illness (ALD), a status allowing financial coverage.
However, the disease has been recognized as such by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1992.
Fibromyalgia affects 2 to 5% of French people
This musculoskeletal condition chronic disease affects more than two million French people (i.e. 2 to 5% of the population) and 14 million people in Europe, 80 to 90% of whom are women.
Fibromyalgia results in diffuse pain and severe, cognitive impairment, sleep and mood and general fatigue. However, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is often difficult for doctors to make because its symptoms can be similar to many other illnesses.
Fibromyalgia: no known causes or treatments
The causes of the condition are not known and there is no specific drug treatment or established management.
The investigation launched by the National Assembly on the proposal of the deputy of Oise Patrick Carvalho, aims to have the disease recognized and to better respond thanks to the French health system, to the pain and distress of fibromyalgia patients.
