The summer break is not just over for schoolchildren! The little world of F1 is taking its turn back to the circuits. At the end of August, the teams are setting up their quarters in Spa-Francorchamps, in Belgium, for the 12e round of the season. At the dawn of the first free practice, Alpine has just confirmed its commitment alongside Fernando Alonso for the 2022 season.

Fernando Alonso will be associated for the 2e consecutive year for the young Frenchman Esteban Ocon, winner of the 11e Grand Prix of the season in Hungary and whose contract has been extended until 2024. ” Fernando’s experience will be essential in the final development and optimization of the chassis and powertrain designed to meet the challenge of the 2022 regulations ”, specifies Laurent Rossi, the director of Alpine. At just forty years old, Fernando is the second most started driver in the discipline, with 322 Grands Prix, including 32 victories, 97 podiums and two world titles acquired with the Renault team in 2005 and 2006.
” I am very happy to confirm the extension of my contract with Alpine F1 Team in 2022. I felt at home as soon as I returned to the team, being welcomed with open arms. Next year, the single-seaters will no longer have the same technical characteristics : They will have in particular larger wheels (18 ”), more complex fins and will be heavier. In fact, the F1 cars will also be slower, with laps 3 to 3.5 seconds slower depending on the circuit. The interest for the organizers of the championship: to strengthen the show! For once, the 2021 season is not lacking in spice … The new sporting and financial regulations (such as budget caps) have already been in place since this year.
