And covered everything with powder
Impressive images of a gas station that turns into a thick foam party within seconds, but with powder. Yes, we deliberately don’t say a powder party, because that sounds like a party where the toilet is the most popular room. Sniffed, uh, snorted? Here you can see what happens when an extinguishing system goes off at a gas station. In the US state of Massachusetts, a powder extinguishing system was accidentally activated, sometime last year. Since the video is now going viral again on TikTok, we thought it would be fun to share it again.
The extinguishing system at the gas station releases a charge of sodium hydrogen carbonate (i.e. baking soda/baking soda) as soon as it thinks it sees the fire. The powder then suffocates the fire. It is not deadly for any pump-goers, but it is by no means very relaxed. It can cause problems with your eyes and irritated airways. Still better than burns, we think. The stuff also leaves a huge mess behind.
Not all gas stations in America have a extinguishing system as you see it in action in the video below. Each state has its own rules for this. We have never seen it in the Netherlands either. It is true that in the Netherlands there is a valve that shuts off the fuel supply to the hoses if a fire starts. The fire brigade reported this a few years ago Broadcasting Brabant.
