It’s no secret that nuts have positive effects on health, since they reduce the rate of cholesterolthe risk of diabetesof cardiovascular illnesses or that of developing certain cancer. But their benefits don’t stop there: a new study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry reveals that they have a positive impact on the intestine.
Half a cup of nuts a day
This research has focused on the changes that occur in communities microbial intestinal after the inclusion of nuts in the diet. To identify these mutations, the researchers conducted an experiment on two groups of rats: for 10 weeks, the first was fed a diet containing the equivalent of half a cup of nuts per day for humans, and the other, to a nut-free diet. The contribution in calories and nutrients was similar in both groups.
Scientists observed an increase in the amount of probiotic bacteria in the intestines of rodents that had consumed this nut. “We find that higher bacterial diversity may be associated with better health outcomes, whereas low diversity is linked to inflammatory bowel disease or obesity,” Explain Lauri O. Byerley, co-author of the study. Half a cup of nuts a day could therefore improve our intestinal health!
