Crowds, security measures, fatigue, delays… Traveling can be stressful, especially in large airports. In New York, at LaGuardia Airport, travelers can find solace with particular agents, as revealed by the New York Post.
These are dogs. Every Friday, a team of canine therapists and their handlers is deployed in Terminal B of the airport. On Friday, January 25, Ziggy, an 8-year-old Italian greyhound and Buddy, an 11-year-old black Labrador were on duty, for the pleasure of travellers.
Distract travelers and ease tensions
“They make the airport – and especially this one – more bearable”, explains to the American media Darlene Collins, 45 years old. This mother was traveling with her three children who played with Ziggy while she checked in at the counter. “If a child is in a rage and sees a dog, it will calm him down,” she adds.
But the dogs aren’t just for the kids. The presence of this “comfort team” is part of the steps taken by LaGuardia airport, which is undergoing redevelopment, in the hope of distracting travelers and easing tensions.
The dogs were trained in canine therapy by the specialized association Bideawee. They are six and take turns every week. The initiative was first set up for the Thanksgiving weekend. Faced with its success, it was renewed.
Some would almost forget that they are in an airport, like this 24-year-old American who had a hard time leaving Ziggy and Buddy. “I wish I didn’t have to take a plane to be able to continue playing with them,” the young man told the New York Post.
