These small white or yellowish, oily crusts that appear on the skull and / or the eyebrows a few weeks of life are due to an excess of sebum. Unsightly and sometimes unpleasant for the baby (itches), cradle cap are however benign and will disappear within a few months, or even 2 years at the latest. The only risk, rare with our current hygiene, is that they become infected.
Good habits to avoid cradle cap
– We do not scratch or rub the crusts: this would only stimulate the secretion of sebum.
– We wash our baby every day with a washing product surgras adapted.
– Apply a special cradle cap cream (in pharmacies) or petroleum jelly in order to soften the crusts which will thus come off more easily when washing. But we avoid the sweet almond because of the risk of allergy to nuts.
We see if the scabs are red, oozing and seem to be infected.
