A quasi-exhaustive French study on the first wave of the epidemic has identified 7 chronic diseases which, at least, double the risks of hospitalization and death: trisomy 21, mental retardation, cystic fibrosis, renal failure, lung cancer, kidney and lung transplantation. But it is age that remains the main risk factor.
- The risks of hospitalization or death double among 60-64 year olds, triple among 70-74 year olds, are multiplied by 6 among 80-84 year olds and by 12 among those aged 90 and over.
- Men are 40% more likely than women to be hospitalized and twice as likely to die.
Age is the first risk factor for developing a severe form of Covid-19. The risks of hospitalization or death thus increase until they double in the 60-64 age group, triple in the 70-74 age group, and be multiplied by 6 in the 80-84 age group and by 12 in the 90 and over age group. In addition to age, certain diseases increase the risk of developing severe forms.
7 diseases particularly at risk
A study conducted by EpiPhare, a scientific group created by the National Health and Medicines Agency (ANSM) and Health Insurance, reveals in a study published on Tuesday February 9 the 47 chronic diseases associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and death. It confirms that men are more at risk than women, with a 40% additional risk of hospitalization and twice the risk of death. The most disadvantaged have a risk of death multiplied by two compared to the most advantaged.
This study was carried out during the first wave, between February 15 and June 15, and is based on data from more than 66 million people, of whom 87,809 were hospitalized and 15,661 died in hospital. This quasi-exhaustive analysis made it possible to precisely determine the chronic diseases associated with an excess risk. In all, 47 were linked to the risk of developing a severe form. In addition to diabetics, so that the risk of hospitalization increases by 64% and by 75% for death, 7 chronic diseases represent an increased risk of hospitalization and death.
- trisomy 21: 7 times greater risk of hospitalization and 23 times greater risk of death.
- kidney transplantation 5 times greater risk of hospitalization and 7 times greater risk of death.
- mental retardation: 4 times more risk of hospitalization and 7 times more risk of death.
- cystic fibrosis: 4 times more risk of hospitalization and 6 times more risk of death.
- End-stage chronic renal failure on dialysis: 4 times greater risk of hospitalization and 5 times greater risk of death.
- active lung cancer: 3 times greater risk of hospitalization and 4 times greater risk of death.
- lung transplantation 3 times greater risk of hospitalization and 6 times greater risk of death.
