It is sometimes useful to pack or compress large files. That means the files are stored in a different way so that they take up less space. This is useful, for example, if you want to send one or more larger files as an attachment to an email or if you want them to use less space on a USB stick.
Not all types of files get smaller with packaging, but sometimes – as with BMP image files – it can make a difference by more than 90%. The originals of the files remain on your computer.
