Discover different styles
Do you like to dance? Then you can take all kinds of classes. But which one is right for you? Get to know three popular styles: ballroom dancing, street dance and belly dancing.
ballroom dancing
Ballroom dancing involves dancing in pairs. There is standard ballroom dancing, ballroom dancing and Latin dancing. Ballroom dancing includes the English waltz, tango, quickstep, slowfox and Viennese waltz. Latin dances include cha cha, rumba, paso doble, samba and jive.
lesson
Usually the class starts with a quiet dance, such as the quickstep. Then you dance a few dances and learn a bit of a new one. The dance teachers do this for you. First without music and then with music.
Clothing
You don’t need any special dancing shoes or clothes to get started. It is important that there is a smooth sole under your shoes, otherwise you will not move easily.
training
Good posture is very important in ballroom dancing. In Latin dancing you stand upright with the weight slightly forward on the ball of the foot. This way you can make quick dance moves. The complex movements require more and more brain work. The tango and the waltz make a greater use of the coordination capacity than half an hour to jog.
belly dancing
Belly dance is probably one of the oldest dances. It is for men and women, young and old. Belly dancing focuses on the pelvic area and hips.
lesson
A class starts with a warm-up. You stretch and loosen hips and arms. Then you do a so-called isolation exercise. For example, you first only move your head, later the arms also move. You finish with a cool down.
Clothing
It is best to wear comfortable clothing. Like stretch pants and a top. You can also put a long scarf, cloth or a belt with coins around your hips, so that the movements come out well. You dance in smooth-soled shoes or barefoot.
training
Belly dancing is a total ‘body & mind work-out’. Your muscles and joints become more flexible and you develop good control. It is good for the condition and the body proportion. You learn to distinguish oriental rhythms and increase your self-awareness.
street dance
Street dance nowadays is a mix of jazz, funk and hip hop. It is a sport with great social interaction with bystanders and fellow dancers. In the Netherlands, street dance is often given at gyms or dance schools. And it’s not just for young people! There are often special classes for adults, so do you still feel agile enough…?
lesson
To prevent injuries, the class starts with a warm-up. Then follows a choreography – these are dances that you will learn – and at the same time you work on your condition. and attitude. You end the class with a cool down.
Clothing
To be able to move well and to sweat it is important to wear loose, airy clothing. Good sports shoes are indispensable.
training
You mainly work on your condition, posture and flexibility. The movements are loose and the steps follow each other in quick succession.
