Contagiousness after corona vaccine
Good question! In this section PlusOnline searches for answers to pressing questions. This time: can you still be contagious after vaccination against the coronavirus?
The answer to this question is not very easy to give. We’ve collected the answers from two experts for you.
‘We do not know’
Marjolein van Egmond, professor of immunology at AmsterdamUMC, via the Healthy Conversation podcast: “That is a difficult question. We do not know. The same applies to when you have had the virus, then you do not know how long that protection lasts. You are probably protected for the time being, but we don’t know whether you can be contagious then, because the immune system has a fast action to clear the virus at that moment, after which a memory response occurs. time you come into contact with the virus, that system is switched on and you get an immune response again to fight it, but that takes a few days before it is fully up and running again. can transmit the virus, so we don’t know yet.”
‘Yes, but (probably) not after a month’
Diederik Gommers, national IC chairman and OMT member, via the BNR podcast Ask Gommers: “If you have just received the vaccine, you can still infect people. Why? Because it also takes a while before you build up antibodies, and how long that is exactly is different for every person, but the idea is that – if you respond well to that vaccine – you should have enough antibodies in a month’s time. your body must be strong enough to immediately tackle and break down that virus (…) So when that happens, you are not contagious either.”
In short: we just have to wait for the vaccination period. As part of the phase four study, vaccinated people are being followed so hopefully we will know more about this topic by then.
