It all just fits
You would say that there should be a BMW M2 with engine damage by now. And if you’re going to be rigorous, you might as well grab a 2 Series and completely rebuild it. But no, Peter Filippo of Filippo Speed Shop picked up a well working one year old BMW M2 Competition for his project. The 3.0-liter inline six disappeared and a 6.2-liter V8 with a power of at least 717 hp from the Dodge Challenger Hellcat was replaced.
Although a V8 does not necessarily have to be longer than a six-in-line, it was a lot of fitting and measuring. In addition, the block will be a little wider. Where most engine mounts partly consist of rubber to absorb vibrations, this eight-cylinder is secured with solid supports. This restricts the movement of the engine in the engine compartment so that it does not bump into anything. The decrease in comfort makes little difference in a race car. In addition, things like power steering and air conditioning have been removed and the seat and pedals are a lot further back so that the V8 has more room.
Furthermore, there was a meaty roll cage in the BMW M2 with Hellcat-V8 and some goodies from Sparco. The brakes come from Stoptech and under the carbon fiber wheel arches are rims from Bimmerworld. His project is on the SEMA show floor in Las Vegas. After the show, he plans to actually use the BMW on the track. So it’s not just a show car.
