In salads, in sauces, as a meat substitute… Soya is a hit! But’UFC What To Choose, a consumer protection association, contacted the French health authorities about it. In question ? Its composition.
Many soy foods are said to contain high doses of phytoestrogens. It is exactly 55 cases, in prepared dishes, desserts, drinks, appetizers, sauces or even biscuits. These substances are naturally produced by certain plants and are similar to the female hormones, estrogens. The problem ? They are potential endocrine disruptors. In the case of soy, they are called “isoflavones” explains UFC Que Choisir.
Risks for children and pregnant women
To give an example, the UFC talks about a soy drink of which one drink “alone provides nearly 150% of the maximum allowable dose for an adult“. But overall, their quantity is too high in many products, the UFC explains that they “greatly exceed the maximum permissible doses“in comparison with what the National Agency for Health and Food Safety (ANSES) recommends.
Beware of children and pregnant women: this is the element that the UFC Que Choisir has asked the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) to put on the labels.
