Yoga would considerably improve the lives of people suffering from arthritis.
Polyarthritis is a particularly violent disease that causes extensive systemic inflammation, cartilage damage and hyperplasia synovium catchy a physical disability and aborn comorbidity psychiatric. It thus reduces the quality and even the life expectancy of those who suffer from it.
A difficult disease to treat
Polyarthritis is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease that results from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Existing medical treatments are limited in scope, fail to cure the psychological component of the disease, and have many side effects. Rima Dada, professor at AIIMSnoted that high disease activity and underlying depression are associated with increased disability, reduced quality of life, and minimized clinical remission rates. It was therefore important to find a solution to treat the disease on the physical and psychological levels.
Beneficial effects
L’AIIMS conducted a randomized study to analyze the effects of practicing 2 hours of yoga, 5 days a week, for 8 weeks, on 72 patients with arthritis. In parallel with control groups were on routine drug treatment. Study results showed significant improvement for arthritis patients who practiced yoga intensively.
Effectively, systemic biomarkers of neuroplasticity, inflammation, immune modulation, cellular health integrity and aging were improved. Disease activity was reduced, as was the disability quotient of the patients, as well as the severity of the depression from which they could be suffering.
Promising results
“Our results show that yoga positively modifies the pathobiology autoimmunity at the cellular and molecular levels by targeting communications between body and mind. Further research is needed to explore possible mechanisms underlying the cumulative effect of yoga on multiple pathways at the cellular level,” eexplains Doctor Dada.
“This study offers a new option. Pharmacological treatments can be supplemented with alternative and complementary interventions such as yoga, to relieve symptoms on a physical and psychosomatic level,” she added.. A rather promising result therefore: yoga could be, in fact, easily associated with the treatment of the disease, which could make remission one day possible.
