The transplant took place a year ago at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff (UK), but was only revealed on Thursday.
Teddy Houlson’s parents waited until April 23, the date of their son’s first birthday, to share their experience in a video. Their wish: that their experience inspire other parents of convicted children.
Teddy lived 100 minutes. He suffered from anencephaly, a congenital brain defect resulting in the absence of brain. While the mother, Jesse Houlston, was pregnant with twins (the second is healthy), Teddy was diagnosed at the 12th week of pregnancy.
One therapeutic abortion was offered by the gynecologist but the parents refused because they wanted to see if their son had a chance of being organ donor.
Teddy’s kidneys saved a man with kidney failure
A few hours after his birth, the kidneys of Teddy were thus transplanted to an adult suffering fromrenal failure. the new born became “the youngest organ donor in the UK” according to the NHS, the country’s public health service.
“He died and lived as a hero. We cannot say how proud we are,” concluded his father.
