The dating site Happn estimates that in 2018, 860,000 French people registered on the application. Does being single affect health?
If the relationship is balanced, being in a couple is generally good for your health, and the French know it. According to the dating site Happn, more than 860,000 of them registered in 2018, with +40% of “crush” (virtual meetings, editor’s note).
In this survey, we learn that the users of the application mainly listen to rap, and that the three places where they see each other the most are La Défense, Place de la République and Gare Saint Lazare, in Paris. The women who meet the most are in finance, consulting or engineer. The luckiest men in love are also in finance, lawyers or architects. You should also know that a Sunday “crush” mainly turns into a conversation on Monday.
“Fewer human protective factors”
“We weren’t actively looking for either of us and yet it fell on us at the corner of the street. We were working in the street next door, and we would never have crossed paths because our jobs and cultures are completely different. But we liked each other, and today I’m so happy to have tried my luck!”, says a user.
“Studies show that single people are in poorer health than people in couples, mainly because a breakup is a weakening factor in life, explains Jean-Victor Blanc, a psychiatrist specializing in the care of generations Y and Z (Hôpital Saint Antoine, Public Assistance – Hospitals of Paris). The break is a first destabilizing element, to which is added loneliness, if celibacy settles in time. There is then less than human protective factors, especially among adults who no longer live with their parents.
A 15% reduction in mortality risk
patrick harris, seduction coach (www.coach-seduction.com), sends most of his clients to his hypno-therapist partner, who specializes in addictions. He adds: “It often happens that the singles I receive are heavy consumers of addictive substances, whether alcohol, tobacco or cannabis, sometimes all three at the same time.”
According to a recent study, marriage is associated with a 15% reduction in the risk of premature death from all causes. Even if they weigh on average two kilos more than single people and do less sport, spouses consume more regional, organic or fair trade products and are less fond of prepared meals. “Our results show how social factors can affect health. In this case, the institution of marriage and certain behavioral changes that occur in this context are directly associated with nutrition and weight,” explains Ralph Hertwig, co- author of the study. The Happn application also notes that the most used emojis in romantic exchanges in 2018 evoke good food.
Don’t obsess over it
In addition, weddings allow young excessive revelers to give up binge drinking, and in the American states which have legalized marriage for all, suicide rates among homosexual and bisexual adolescents have also fallen markedly. Finally, let’s quote a study from the Journal of Clinical Oncology, which shows that people in a relationship fight better against cancer. Be careful though: if finding love is important, not obsessing over it is just as important. Managed well, being single can also have multiple positive impacts on health.
