As part of the study, the researchers interviewed nearly 18,000 middle and high school students in Japan. The questions asked about their mental health, sleep and cell phone use habits.
The researchers conclude that teens who use their cellphones after going to bed are more affected by mental health problems and report more suicidal urges than those who stop using their cellphones at the same time.
This study follows previous research, which had previously linked poor quality sleep to mental health problems in adolescents, including work published last year in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, which showed that adolescents who have trouble sleeping are more prone to suicidal urges.
