A rare but proven risk. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is breaking the enthusiasm of followers of acne creams, lotions and other skin cosmetics. Their use can cause some people to have an allergic reaction which can be life threatening. Don’t go so far as to throw your entire sore closet in the trash. The American health agency specifies that this is preventive information and that the risk remains rare among consumers of this type of care.
Two ingredients to watch out for
In the FDA’s sights are precisely those treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, two antibacterial and anti-inflammatory active ingredients used to treat acne-prone skin. Problem, these substances can be potentially irritating on the most sensitive and reactive skin types. And in some people, these ingredients could cause various symptoms: tight throat, difficulty breathing, feeling like you might pass out, swelling of the eyes, face, lips or tongue.
While manufacturers do not specify the risk of a severe allergic reaction on the care packaging, the FDA considers it important to inform the general public of even the smallest risk. The agency says it has received 131 reports of severe allergic reactions in 45 years. They were followed by hospitalization in 44% of cases. However, none resulted in death.
If it is therefore right to keep it, it is better to test your anti-acne product on a very small area before using it. It is thus possible to verify that no abnormal manifestation appears such as redness, burning, swelling, itching. If so, see a doctor immediately.
