A Canadian study published on May 8, 2015 in the journal Sport Medicine reveals that the use of a personalized music playlist can increase the duration of physical efforts by up to 70%.
The study was carried out on 34 patients who were part of a cardiac rehabilitation program, which included physical activity, education and counseling to recover from a heart problem. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one included a classic rehab program without music, while the other included the use of synchronized playlists of personalized music. All songs played to these participants were based on their musical preferences, genres and favorite artists. On the other hand, the music was chosen according to the pace they had to follow during their physical exercises, for perfect synchronization.
Of the participants who used audio devices, half were unknowingly subjected to Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS): their sounds were altered by incorporating additional rhythmic beats to further improve rhythm / tempo synchronization.
After more than three months of follow-up, data shows that patients exercising with a synchronized, personalized playlist averaged 105.4 minutes more weekly exercise than those in the group without music. The patients on playlist and rhythmic auditory stimulation did at least 261.1 minutes more exercise than the other two groups, which corresponds to about a 70% increase in weekly physical activity.
In conclusion, the authors believe that the use of personalized and synchronized music is an effective approach to help patients adhere to a physical activity program. This study should therefore be taken into account at the clinical level, especially for patients who frequently abandon physical activity programs intended to improve their state of health.
