Since the 2015 law on energy transition, the installation of the new Linky electricity meters put into service by EDF is worrying. According to the Robin des Toits association, among others, these smart boxes are harmful to health because of the electromagnetic waves they emit. To be clear, Mayor Joseph Carles de Blagnac (Haute-Garonne) commissioned an independent study from the firm Exem on its potential dangerousness. The findings have been revealed in La Dépêche du Midi End of november.
It is the very operation of the meter that worries its detractors. This calculates the consumption of electricity by the technology of power line carriers (CPL). A technology already used by individuals, to connect all parts of their homes to the Internet. However, it is accused of significantly increasing the levels of electromagnetic radiation emitted by this equipment.
Values below the authorized thresholds
According to this new survey, the radiation emitted near the meter would however be well below the authorized thresholds, and do not allow to conclude to any health risks. “The measurement of the magnetic field around a home is 0.0095 microtesla while the regulatory value allows up to 6.25 microtesla”, reveals the regional daily. The electric field is found at values of 0.24 volts per meter, while it is allowed up to 87 volts per meter.
The mayor of Blagnac, in favor of the recognition of a right to refuse installation of the meter, does not however intend to stop there. To confirm these results, a second measurement campaign during the teletransmission of the readings will aim to ascertain or not increases in emissions, and whether these remain within the authorized limit.
For the moment, it is impossible to refuse the installation of a Linky meter at home, since it meets the application of a European directive on upgrading dating from 2010. So much so that in March, a couple de Rennais had to move, suffering from tinnitus, headaches, dizziness and insomnia after it was put into service in their apartment. The couple were in fact electro-sensitive, a pathology recently recognized in France and responsible for disabling symptoms.
