A diet that is too fatty would slow down neurogenesis, that is to say the birth and growth of new neurons, in women. This would explain why women are more at risk of Alzheimer’s disease than men.
A conclusion reached by researchers at the University of Albany (United States) after applying different diets to mice.
Only female mice were affected
For 18 weeks, the scientists fed groups of male and female mice either a normal diet or a high-fat diet. The high-fat diet caused weight gain and elevated blood sugar in both male and female mice, but only female mice showed impaired neurogenesis. The latter had fewer new neurons, which was not the case in the male mice. The conclusions of this study have just been published on E.neuro.
