We know: blueberries are excellent for your health. They protect us against cognitive decline, they help children’s brain development, they facilitate weight loss, they help memory, they help boost libido … Blueberries could even help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. !
And it’s not over: according to a new study conducted by the University of East Anglia (in England), consuming 150 g of blueberries daily would reduce the cardiovascular risk by 15% on average in people who suffer from obesity.
The researchers (who have published their work in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) worked with a group of 138 obese volunteers aged 50 to 75. All suffered from metabolic syndrome, which is defined as the presence of high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and / or high blood sugar in an obese person. .
Lower cardiovascular risk in obesity
For 6 months, the volunteers were separated into 3 groups: group 1 consumed 150 grams of blueberries (thawed) daily, group 2 consumed 75 grams each day (idem: frozen blueberries) while group 3 had no right than a placebo having the color and taste of blueberries.
Verdict? At the end of the experiment, the British researchers found that, in participants who consumed 150 g of blueberries per day, the cardiovascular risk was lower by 12% and 15%.
“We found that consuming one serving of blueberries per day significantly improved cardiovascular function and arterial flexibility,” explains Dr. Peter Curtis, co-author of this work. Shall we go to the supermarket?
