According to this study, 5,609 epidemics were reported in 2007 (latest figures known), affecting nearly 40,000 people and causing 19 deaths. More than 2,000 epidemics have been confirmed by laboratory or epidemiological evidence, demonstrating an association between the infection and the food source.
Four times out of ten, salmonella was responsible for this infection. Contaminated food products were most often consumed at home or in restaurants, cafes, hotels or caterers.
The data for this study were provided by 22 Member States of the European Union.
