He is more desirable than others
Remind yourself every now and then that you live in the wild sci-fi future. In your pocket you have a phone that you can use to call a pizza, or a car, or a date. Your watch monitors your heart rate, the television predicts the weather and every time you connect your phone to a modern car, it downloads your dreams, wishes and fears.
Welcome to a universe where a Ford Mustang XXL and a Czech minivan are rivals. Strange, isn’t it? This is where the brave new world of electric driving leads. Ford has determined that they can only make a $50,000+ battery-powered SUV appetizing by wrapping it in a ponycar package.
Why were other cars not voted Family Car of the Year 2021?
Skoda doesn’t do retro. They thrive on common sense. And so they’ve taken the basis of the Volkswagen ID.4 to create a spacious, refined and comfortable e-crossover, while leaving out VW’s irritating interior minimalism. Compared to the ID.4, the Skoda has a better touchscreen. Tactile buttons. Solid-feeling plastic. And it is cheaper. Somewhat painful in the boardroom, but for the customer it is excellent.
These two cars were the pleasant under-the-radar surprises of 2021. Fortunately, Skoda’s lack of pretensions has aptly translated to their electric flagship – suddenly the ‘premium’ Audi Q4 and co (which are identical under the skin) are no longer so firmly in place. their shoes. But judging by the colorful reactions among the Mach-E videos on ‘s YouTube channel, TopGear American disciples have not yet forgiven Ford for bringing down their beloved type designation from a marketing point of view.
Why the Mach-e is the 2021 Family Car of the Year
We do. The Mach-E is roomy, smooth, and since the EV conversation starts and ends with range, it’s currently the only competitor that could give Tesla a headache. Stick to rear-wheel drive and the big battery version is good for over 530 kilometers in the real world. This is where the Skoda falls short – built-in ice scrapers, hidden umbrellas and fold-out headrest cushions mean you’d rather be home sooner than having to grab a rainy loading moment on the road just to be sure.
Ford has gone on a futuristic journey with this car, and they have made some silly choices. Is it really helpful to have to explain to your kids that they have to put their hand in a back door to open it? hmm. And if you’re really going to build everything into a large touchscreen except the start and PRND button, you’d better make sure the thing is flawless. The Mustang screen is fine, but can’t compete with Tesla’s.
Fortunately, there is still just a light switch, and a stalk for the windshield wipers. A screen in front of you ensures that the speed and range are in your field of view. All things a Model Y can’t offer you.
Neither of these cars are perfect. But they are comfortable, versatile and relieving. Does the Ford win the comparison because it is just a bit more fun to drive, or because of that range? No, not that.
Why does the Mustang Mach-e win?
He wins because Ford injected the e-SUV with a fraction of the special. The Enyaq is yet another anonymous VW Group creation, but the Mach-E is something to be proud of. A topic of conversation. A car that gives you a boost on a gray Monday morning: ‘Still glad I chose this one.’
In a future where everything is electric and all critters are equal, the Mustang is somehow more desirable than the others. And that is why it is our 2021 Family Car of the Year.
