The vaginal sauna is very popular, it is a steam bath with medicinal herbs for the private parts. But it presents risks, as evidenced by this news item revealed by the DailyMail. A 62-year-old woman suffered second-degree burns from a vaginal sauna. This case was taken up by the journal The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Canada last June.
The victim went to a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine to reduce pain due to genital prolapse (descending of organs), which she had to undergo surgery a few weeks later.
Concern of gynecologists
She sat above the boiling water bath, supposed to “refresh the vagina”. The result was not what was expected: burning on the cervix and on the walls of the vagina.
If this case of vaginal burning is the first recorded, doctors strongly advise against vaginal saunas for women suffering from genital prolapse. In general, gynecologists are concerned about the use of this technique which can unbalance the vaginal flora and expose the vagina to bacteria.
