How do you check whether your egg is still fresh without breaking it?
There is a best before date on a box of eggs, but after that date they are not suddenly spoiled. How do you check whether your egg is still good without breaking it? With this handy trick.
Eggs stay fresh longest if you keep them in the fridge. Preferably in the box, then they dry out less quickly. Keep them away from food with a strong smell, such as fish or garlic, because eggs quickly absorb odors thanks to the porous shell.
Best before date
Eggs can be kept for at least four weeks after being laid. The box usually has a best before date. This means that the producer guarantees that the quality is in order until this date. After that date, eggs are not suddenly spoiled. Use your senses to determine if the eggs are still fresh: do they still smell good and look normal?
The trick: float or sink
If you want to check whether eggs are still good without breaking them, you can use this handy trick. Carefully place the raw egg in a large glass of water. If the egg remains on its side on the bottom, it is farm fresh. If it stays on the bottom, but it stands upright, your egg is a bit older but still edible. Does your egg float to the surface? Then it’s not good anymore.
