A phone used to cost a lot less money than it does now. There are more and more smartphones for which you have to pay at least 1500. Why? And is it worth paying for it?
When Apple presented the iPhone X in 2017, people were shocked. It was going to cost 1000 euros, an absurd amount! Still, many people finally agreed. In fact, paying so much money for a smartphone soon became ‘the most normal thing in the world’. For those who were interested, at least…
Why so expensive?
One of the main reasons is the fact that the smartphone market has not really grown for years. People are not replacing their smartphones so quickly, also because they are becoming more and more advanced. Bigger battery, more space, nicer screen. After 2 years, a top model is still top.
In the past, a telephone was only used to make calls. Now you can play games, watch Netflix, or listen to Spotify. As a result, technologically ingenious chips and sensors are needed, which unfortunately come with a hefty price tag. Smartphones are becoming more and more versatile: calculator, GPS, camera, scanner, fax and game console in one.
But above all: smartphone manufacturers want to make money. Manufacturers also talk to us about certain needs. For example, the Nokia 9 Pureview has no less than FIVE cameras on the back. The Motorola Razr can be opened. Not vital, but there is still a market for…
Cheap or expensive?
Of course, some of those modern antics can add value. Do you take a lot of photos? Then a good camera is important. gamer? A better screen and sound. Often on the go? Get one with a big battery.
No special wishes?
Then a phone of 500 euros or less is also fine. If you want a beautiful phone that lasts a long time but doesn’t cost a lot, choose the Samsung Galaxy S20 or the OnePlus Nord for about 300-500 euros. Those who prefer an Apple can go for the iPhone SE, a fairly powerful device that ‘only’ costs 450 euros.
