Since last July I have had tingling sensations in my face: around my eyes, in my forehead, cheeks and nostrils. Only my chin doesn’t participate. Are they affected facial nerves? I’ve been through the medical circuit pretty well. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction?
Joris Bartstra, journalist with a medical degree.
Tingling can indicate affected nerves, but in your case that is not so likely. Roughly speaking, there are two causes: if a nerve branch is jammed somewhere or it is damaged, then the complaints are always one-sided. If the metabolism of the nerves is bad due to, for example, diabetes, bad blood vessels or vitamin deficiency, the complaints almost always start with your feet. The most common cause of symmetrical tingling in your face is hyperventilating. The best approach for this is distraction: immerse yourself in a book, newspaper, film or podcast, think of a task that you really want to finish or call someone for a nice conversation; not about the complaints.
