“Fragile until puberty, the skin and eyes are more sensitive to UV rays. Young children should therefore not be exposed to the sun’s rays for a prolonged period, even if they are protected by sunscreen or clothing.”complete THENational Union of Dermatologists and Venereologists (SNDV). “Before the age of one, a baby should even avoid any direct exposure to the sun” add the doctors.

What are the risks of not protecting yourself from the sun?
Among the skin cancers cited by Shereene Idriss, two main categories must be distinguished. “Carcinomas are the most common and melanomas are considered the most dangerous”indicates the SNDV, recalling on this occasion “that around 100,000 skin cancers are detected annually in France, a figure which has tripled in 30 years.”
In addition to cancer, UV rays not filtered by sunscreen can cause premature aging of the skin, sunburn, allergic reactions, burns and potentially fatal heatstroke.
How to apply sunscreen correctly?
To be effective against all these ailments, sunscreen must be applied in a thick layer. It is also important to reapply it every two hours and systematically after swimming.
It is also recommended to use high protection factors (index 50+), active against both UVB and UVA. “With a longer wavelength, UVA damages the deep layer of the skin (the dermis), while UVB damages the surface (the epidermis)”, specifies the SNDV
74% of French people do not systematically protect themselves from the sun
“For all outdoor activities, in addition to applying sunscreen, it is recommended to seek out shaded areas as much as possible. Be careful, however, as shade does not systematically and completely protect against UV rays! At the beach, for example, a parasol is useful but does not completely block the sun’s rays because of the reflection on the sand,” conclude the specialists.
According to a recent survey, 74% of French people say they do not systematically protect themselves from the sun when taking part in outdoor leisure or sporting activities.
