They’re pretty, comfortable and perfect for going straight from work to your weekly running session. They are your favorite sneakers, and you may be one of those who leave them only for special occasions. But is it wise to wear them every day? “In itself, this is not a problem, replies Jean-Loup Lafeuillade, President of the National Federation of Chiropodists. The sneakers are not bad as such, and do not deform the feet of adults and children. However, you have to be careful.” Certainly, but why?
To each practice his shoe
You know it: not all sneakers are the same. Some are designed for running, while others are designed for tennis or, of course, basketball itself. “And depending on the practice for which they are intended, they can be more or less stiff, or more or less airy.” What can, in some cases, be a problem: “You have to be careful with the design of the said sneaker. If it is closed and too synthetic, it can cause perspiration and lead to the risk of fungal infections or other skin problems due to maceration of the foot.”
But that’s not all : “Some sneakers can be quite hard and cause real discomfort and then possible pathologies. But I put all that in the conditional. We have generations of people who wear a lot of them and who are very well. The idea is just to choose the sneakers that are perfectly suited to your sporting practice or how you will use in general.” Yes, but how to choose ?
A podiatrist can help you
Should you go to a podiatrist before buying a pair of sneakers? In some cases, yes: “If you have pain, a history of surgery or even a history of tendinopathy, you should consult a health professional to see what type of foot you have and which shoes to choose. You have pronator models (with supports inwards, editor’s note) or supinators (with supports outside, editor’s note.) and there, the advice of a specialist salesperson is not enough.
This is all the more true if you combine regular sports practice and the search for performance. If it is a Sunday practice, nothing obliges you to go through a practice. But know this: it won’t hurt you anyway!
