Why do we decide one day to go organic ? A nutritional epidemiology research team from the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm) has studied the Nutrinet-santé study to draw up the profile of the organic consumer. Indeed, the consumption of products from organic farming is constantly increasing in France: the organic home consumption market has thus increased by nearly 20% between 2012 and 2014.
The analyzes were carried out on a very large sample of 54,283 individuals participating in the NutriNet-Santé study. The results, published in the journal British Journal of Nutrition show that it is above all for health reasons that “nutrinauts” decide to go organic, and that choice of taste only comes second.
Looking further into their eating habits, we learn that these consumers of organic products also tend to:
- be vegetarian or vegan
- use dietary supplements
- dieting to stay fit but not to lose weight
- be more likely to know the nutritional recommendations related to
- products of plant origin than those related to products of animal origin
- suffer from food allergies
- less suffer from hypertension or diabetes.
Finally, eating organic is more often a choice to regain control of one’s health for women than for men. In organic consumers, women have often been treated for cancer in the past.
