Let the food cool down as soon as possible
Handy: cooking for 2 days so that you still have a portion of food in the freezer for a busy day. Leftovers are also ideal for freezing. That’s the best way to do it.
Perhaps the most important tip is to ensure that you cool the dish as quickly as possible. In this way, bacteria have less chance of multiplying in the meantime. Do you want to freeze leftovers or a complete meal? Cool the dish completely as quickly as possible. For example, by dividing the food over freezer containers and placing these containers in a container of cold water. Preferably do not let the food cool in the still warm pan.
Then stick a sticker on the freezer containers with the date and what you are freezing, you can also state the number of portions or people. Stir a leftover or meal a few more times while it cools. Once it has cooled down completely, you can put it in the freezer.
Once in the freezer, it is also good that the freezing happens quickly. The faster you can freeze, the fewer ice crystals form and the better the taste of the dish remains. Does your freezer have a ‘quick freeze’ or freeze mode? Then use it. Especially when freezing large portions.
After freezing, most homemade meals can be kept in the freezer for another three months. Keep the freezer organized. Write down in a notebook or in your smartphone what you keep in the freezer, and cross out what you get out of it.
