Thirteen years ago, I, an 89-year-old woman, had a new hip on my left; five years ago it was the turn of the right. I have had back and groin pain for a few months now. Walking is getting harder and harder, so I don’t get enough exercise. And that’s annoying, because I like to move. I am healthy, live independently and would like to keep it that way for a while. Is there anything else I can do or do I have to take the painkillers?

Orthopedic surgeons are nowadays no longer afraid to perform (re)operation if necessary and if your physical condition allows it. But that is always an individual balancing of benefits and risks. In addition, I would have a physiotherapist look at it, because there are also exercises to maintain the mobility of the hip and back. You can benefit from that. I recommend that you discuss the options with your doctor.
