Daily exposure to light and dark is not trivial. This helps keep our body clock on a rhythm of 24 hours, which in turn allows it to regulate our metabolism. This is why falling asleep in front of the screen light television can disrupt metabolism and lead to weight gain and even obesity, according to a study published in the Jama of internal medicine.
5 kg more in 5 years
For this study, led by the US National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, researchers analyzed data relating to the health and lifestyle of nearly 44,000 American women between the ages of 35 and 74. For 5 years, they focused on data about sleep, light exposure and weight gain. They concluded that women who fell asleep in front of the television showed a weight gain of 5 kg in 5 years. And they had 30% more risk become obese.
“For fight against obesity, we recommend eating better and moving more, but we don’t think we can also reduce weight gain with a public health message as simple as: “Turn off all light sources when you sleep” says Dr Dale Sandler, lead author of the study.
