The lack of regulation of cosmetics sold in the United States is to the detriment of consumers, some of whom are faced with side effects of certain products. A study published in the journal Jama Internal Medicine reports on the situation: between 2004 and 2016, no less than 5,144 complaints were filed according to figures collected by the Food and Drug Administration, which represents an average of 400 complaints per year.
The phenomenon is not about to be reversed, on the contrary the trend is even increasing according to the study: the number of complaints received by the FDA doubled in 2016 (1597 in 2016 against 706 in 2015).
In France, a cosmetic product is subject to control and monitoring by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) in coordination with the DGCCRF (General Directorate for Consumption, Competition and Repression of Fraud), in the United States, the system is much more flexible. The ANSM has a vigilance system to monitor side effectsresulting from the use of cosmetic products.
Common complaints about baby products
In the USA, regulationsis much more flexible and cosmetics manufacturers are not required, as in France, to guarantee that their products meet legislative and regulatory constraints and do not present any danger to health. Hence the explosion of reports of adverse effects related to their use. The most problematic products relate to hair care, skin care and tattoos. The most numerous complaints due to “serious health effects” have been made on baby productsskin cleansers, hair dyes and other hair care products.
