VIDE0 – The Breton town of Landudec humorously tries to attract a general practitioner. The inhabitants have been waiting for the installation of a new doctor for more than 4 years.
Small village of 1,400 souls located in the beautiful region of Finistère (Brittany) is desperately looking for a general practitioner. In a humorous video titled Doctor or not Doctor, the inhabitants of Landudec try to seduce the lucky chosen one. With a lot of self-mockery, they promote their small town in the Haut Pays Bigouden and its assets: hiking trails, camping, nightclub, retirement home, school… Something to make the long-awaited newcomer happy.
If the Landudecois go all out, it is because they have been looking for their doctor for more than 4 years. The nursing home does have a nurse, a physiotherapist and an osteopath – who can be seen in the video – but the general practitioner remains the big absentee. A difficult situation facing a dozen municipalities in the Pays Bigouden, as well as a large number of French regions. In 2015, 192 medical deserts were identified by the Order of Physicians, in which nearly 2.5 million people live.
Bretons innovate to find their doctor
Thus, since the traditional means have failed, the town hall has decided to innovate. With this video seen more than 84,000 times since the end of July, Landudec will participate in the second edition of the “Generalist Dating: 60 seconds to convince”, organized by the Brittany Regional Health Agency, on October 20 at the Faculty of Medicine. from Brest. On the same principle as the speed dating evenings, where singles come to seek love, the local elected officials will come to meet young general practitioners looking for a practice in which to settle.
These original initiatives seem to be commonplace in Brittany. In June 2014, the town of Limerzel in Morbihan had the brilliant idea of filming a fake newscast to alert health professionals of their situation. Unfortunately two years later, no doctor has settled there yet. On the other hand, the hoax mounted by the town hall of La Roche-Derrien in Côtes-d’Armor last March worked very well. While he had announced the recruitment of a healing druid, failing to find “real doctors”, a general practitioner, and even a psychologist, volunteered and will arrive next October.
