The cryptosporidiosis parasite, a disease that causes diarrhoea, can be easily caught in swimming pools and bathing spots during the summer.
Be careful, this is the disease that can easily be contracted in summer: cryptosporidiosis, caused by a parasite that can survive for several days in chlorinated water, causes severe diarrhoea.
According to a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of epidemics of this disease increased by an average of 13% per year between 2009 and 2017. During this period, there were 444 epidemics of cryptosporidiosis and 7,465 confirmed cases in the States -United. One person died from this disease.
The recorded outbreaks are attributable to 35% to swimming pools, paddling pools or water parks, 15% to contact with livestock, 13% to contact with children in childcare facilities and 3% due to whole milk or of apple cider.
Very dangerous for young children
“Young children can become seriously ill and easily spread the Crypto parasite, explains Michele Hlavsa within the CDC. They do not know how to use the toilet and wash their hands well or are learning to do so. As parents, we can take steps to keep our children clean in water, in contact with animals or in daycare settings.”
The Crypto parasite is a tough opponent: it has a thick shell and can survive several days in chlorinated water. It is also very aggressive: the diarrhea it causes can last up to three weeks.
If you or your child have diarrhea, the CDC’s advice is not to go to water parks or swimming pools. You should also avoid swallowing pool water. When a child is feeling unwell, they should stay home and be kept away from daycare facilities. If you come into contact with animals, be sure to wash your hands with soap and water and leave your shoes on your doorstep. Regarding milk and cider, make sure to buy pasteurized products.
