There are several causes for sweaty feet
Everyone suffers from sweaty feet from time to time, for example due to hot weather. However, if you have sweaty feet every day, it is wise to take action. And not just because sweaty feet stink.
Sweaty feet can smell quite bad. That smell is caused by bacteria that live under ideal conditions – warm and moist feet! – rapid multiplication.
Excessive sweating
Almost always wet feet from sweat, feet that barely want to get warm, feet that look wrinkly and softened. If you suffer from these symptoms, you probably suffer from extreme sweaty feet, also known as hyperhidrosis pedis. The meaning of hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating and hyperhidrosis pedis involves excessive sweating of the feet. The glands that cause excessive sweating are mainly located in the palm of the hand, the armpit and under the sole of the foot. Excessive sweating of the feet often leads to other problems, such as fungal infections.
Causes sweaty feet
There are several causes for sweaty feet:
- Shoes that pinch or do not ventilate sufficiently (for example, shoes made of nylon or rubber)
- Socks that do not ventilate sufficiently or retain moisture
- Insufficient personal hygiene
- Stress or fatigue
- A bad physical condition
- An illness or condition (such as diabetes or metabolic problems)
- The use of certain medicines
This helps against sweaty feet
Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done about sweaty feet. Fortunately, there are ways to ease the suffering:
- If possible, wash your feet several times a day with water and mild soap. You can also use an antibacterial soap or add a dash of vinegar to the water.
- Always dry the feet thoroughly, especially between the toes. Wait a moment before putting on your socks and shoes.
- Always opt for socks made of bamboo or cotton, avoid socks with synthetic materials.
- Put on clean socks every day or several times a day and wash your socks at a higher temperature.
- Preferably change your shoes every day and make sure that worn shoes can dry well.
- Walk home without shoes as much as possible.
- Consider insoles that absorb moisture, dissipate heat and combat bad odors.
- At the drugstore or pharmacy you will find various remedies against sweaty feet and foot odor. Think of sweaty foot spray, foot cream with antiperspirant, bactericidal ointment, foot deodorant or talcum powder.
- Do you suffer from fungal nails or athlete’s foot, go to a pedicure. If you are a diabetic, go to a medical chiropodist.
