UN experts have revealed to AFP an extract from its alarming report on biodiversity, taken up by The Express. Between 500,000 and one million animal and plant species could be threatened with extinction. Out of a total of 8 million worldwide. And this, for the most part, in the coming decades, notes the 1,800-page report.
UN researchers have unveiled this estimate based on work that crosses many studies. This mass disappearance would be caused by urbanization, land use, fishing and even hunting. But also, of course, pollution, pesticides and in general the resulting global warming.
The men behind the 6th mass extinction
These estimates are unveiled during a week of discussion, which will begin on April 29 and last until May 4, between scientists and policy makers. This report will be presented with the aim of generating concrete measures to remedy this disappearance.
Scientists believe that the Earth has entered its sixth mass extinction. In the last 500 years, it is estimated that around 680 species of vertebrates have already become extinct. It is the first time in Earth’s history that humans have been responsible for mass extinction.
