At the beginning of April, the National Assembly adopted at first reading the principle of testing this controversial device. Yesterday, the Senate, in turn, gave the green light by adding a condition: that these shooting rooms be integrated into health establishments.
“The Senate wished, against the advice of the government, that addictions be taken care of and integrated in health establishments and hospitals, in reception centers placed under the responsibility of medical personnel,” wrote in a report. communicated the rapporteur Catherine Deroche.
When the text is definitively adopted by the Assembly, the first lower-risk drug consumption room should see the light of day in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, within the confines of the Lariboisière Hospital, in early 2016. It will be jointly managed by the hospital and by the Gaïa association, a drug addiction prevention and care structure.
For the Minister of Health, Marisol Touraine, the objective “is not to trivialize, to facilitate drug consumption but to take into account the situations that exist, whether we endure them or not, whether we see them. or not”. According to her, there are more than 80,000 intravenous drug users in France and 100 deaths from overdose each year.
