Like grapefruit, orange or clementine, lemon (from its learned name, Citrus limonum) is a mine of vitamin C, with a content of 52 mg per 100 g which has the advantage of being very stable in the weather. By what miracle, when many fruits lose 50% of their vitamins in the days following picking? Because vitamin C is protected by the thick skin of the fruit, of course! Suddenly, with a freshly squeezed lemon juice associated with that of half an orange, we cover the recommended daily intake from breakfast. And we actively fight against microbial and viral attacks in winter, and against fatigue and loss of form the rest of the year.
The virtues of lemon
An interesting antioxidant : Lemon contains different types of flavonoids, antioxidant compounds that neutralize free radicals in the body and thus prevent cardiovascular disease.
A powerful antiseptic : it is said that it fights on its own about twenty germs, which shows how useful it is to chase away winter infections. But its antiseptic action is also effective against urinary, bladder and kidney infections, and its diuretic action accelerates the elimination of toxins.
beauty side: we love it for its astringent properties: it tightens the pores of combination or oily skin. And its disinfectant properties are beneficial to acne-prone skin.
Home side: it fulfills many functions: deodorant, cleaner, surface reviver, it is also a good antiseptic and antibacterial.
The contraindications of lemon
There are very few of them: avoid eating them when you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux so as not to irritate the lining of the esophagus and consume them away from taking antacid medication because citrus fruits, including lemon, increase the absorption of the aluminum contained in this type of treatment.
Choosing the right lemon
A good lemon is both dry and heavy. Prefer it without post-harvest treatment or better, organic. The classic yellow lemon is covered with a shiny film that mixes fungicide, pesticide, insecticide and petroleum-derived wax: you must therefore wash your skin well by brushing it under hot water.
Did you know ?
The French lemon from Menton is considered one of the best by connoisseurs. The Mediterranean climate keeps it away from sudden temperature changes and gives it its mildness. Reputed to be low in acid and very juicy, its pulp is often tasted like that of an orange by purists.
